Multi user Profile Installation using a TCP/IP network 1. Ensure that each machine on the network has a unique name and IP address. These IP addresses should be defined in the Hosts file of each machine on the network. On Windows XP, your hosts file will be in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc. On Windows 95/98 it will be in your C:\Windows directory. To find your hosts file, highlight your windows directory from Windows Explorer and right click. Select "Search". Enter "hosts" in "all or part of the file name" and click on the "Search" button. Your hosts file should contain lines simelar to the following. 192.168.0.10 ServerName 192.168.0.11 Client1Name 192.168.0.12 Client2Name 192.168.0.13 Client3Name Where ServerName is the name of your server on the network. Client1Name, Client2Name and Client3Name are the names of your client machines. The number to the left is your unique IP address. Edit your Hosts file and ensure that the server name and all client names exist. Ensure that the first three numbers are 192.168.0 and that the forth number is unique. These numbers must match the numbers set up for each machine on the network. To view your existing IP addresses, from each machine on the network, select the Network Neighbourhood option from your Control Panel, and select to amend the settings. For the TCP/IP network protocol, select the "Properties" button. To check that your machines are communicating across the network, use the ping command. From a system prompt, enter the command "ping MachineName" where MachineName is the name you have assigned to the machine on the network. If the ping command completes without errors, the machines are communicating successfully. Refer to www.homenethelp.com for further instructions on how to set up TCP/IP networks. 2. Download the latest version of Profile from the web site www.dms-intnat.com and install this onto your server. You will need to re-boot the server at this point. Run the Profile system and select "Configure" from the drop down menus and select "System". From the Configuration tab, select "Embed Images". Accept the changes and close. Exit Profile 3. Install the latest version of Profile on all the client machines which need to run the system. You will need to re-boot each machine after installation. From each client machine, run the Profile system and then exit. This is to create the database alias. Then, for each client machine, select the BDE Administrator from the control panel and highlight the Profile database. Amend the SERVER NAME property to point to the PROFILE.GDB database on the server. If you have accepted the default installation settings, this will be set to the following. ServerName:C:\Program files\Profile\PROFILE.GDB Where ServerName is the name of the server. You can do a search for the database at this stage, but, ensure that you amend the property to the above format. i.e. remove the forward slashes and ensure that there is a colon after the server name and drive letter. Check that you can run the Profile system from each client machine. 4. For each of the client machines, delete the Interbase directory. If you accepted the default settings, this will be C:\Program files\Interbase. Then For each of the client machines, delete the file PROFILE.GDB from the Profile directory. This will be in C:\Program files\Profile. if you accepted the default settings.
